ABSTRACT
The appearance of Sanctuary in a popular edition, last year, made the American public suddenly aware of the savage and eccentric power of William Faulkner; but his earlier work, in some ways more significant, remains comparatively little known. It is on the assumption that English readers are even less familiar with Faulkner's writing that I venture to present my own appreciation of it.
