ABSTRACT
Schools: Building on Success (DfES, 2001) promoted the policy of yet more publicly funded faith schools on the basis of their being popular, academically successful and contributing to the diversity of provision which made choice possible. Many different faith groups are now seeking state funding under the academies programme for the creation of their own distinctive faith schools. This policy, however, is not popular in some quarters and is challenged.
