ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the significance of what four Chinese English language teachers Fangxue, Lichang, Hongyue and Meiling learned in the West would only be evident if its impact is subject to analysis. For Fangxue, the Western PhD reaffirmed his belief in himself as a responsible and dedicated steward who could garner a following. Hongyue decided that a PhD program in Australia was the right choice for her mainly because of the opportunity for independent study it provided. For Meiling, Western education was part of a maturing process, which led to her finding herself and a self-defined path for her future. In the case of these Western-trained Chinese English language teachers, critical reflection on their past and present experiences were the hard work that they undertook. They were rewarded with an accurate view of where their Western education had brought them and where it might take them further down the road.
