ABSTRACT

The term “fast-growing countries” (FGCs) refers to countries with significant importance and good performance in economic growth during a given period. The BASIC and BRIC countries are typical FGC groupings taking a lead in the world economy, while East Asia and the Pacific, South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean are top fast-growing regions. Normally, FGCs share some common features and challenges in development and adaptation. For example, large populations and the growth of aggregate wealth have been increasing their exposure to climate change. At the same time, the FGCs must take socioeconomic development, poverty reduction and greenhouse gas emissions into consideration. In fact, adaptation has become an extra burden for FGCs in covering their development deficit.
