ABSTRACT

The Patrologie Lai'ine began to appear in 1844. The printing press at Petit-Montrouge issued about 20 volumes yearly, an enormous output and superior to all expectations: in 1855, the 217 promised volumes were ready for the subscribers. From 1862 to 1864, Migne published four further volumes of Indices. The 162 volumes of the Patrologie Grecque were printed during the period between 1857 and 1866 at the rate of 18 volumes yearly. We can get some idea of the immensity of the undertaking, if we realise that the Latin

series represented 297,567 pages, and the Greek 285,724 pages, or a total of 533,291 pages, which were all stereotyped, that is reproduced on tin plates which permitted of successive rcimpressions with no fresh corrections.
