ABSTRACT

The political history of the South Asian subcontinent dramatically changed on 14/15 August 1947, with the emergence of two new independent states of India and Pakistan. Direct British authority and British paramountcy over the Indian princes all lapsed. Although the new nations of India and Pakistan began life as dominions, vital decisions now lay entirely in the hands of Indians and Pakistanis. They were the masters of their own destinies. Unfortunately their leaders have since 1947 failed to prevent continuing political and military tension in the subcontinent (Map 11.1).
