ABSTRACT

A WIDE wooden bridge arches over one of the tidewater canals that wend their way through the whole of the lower part of Tokyo. It is like unto an hundred of its fellow-bridges, rising gently from each end, its floor boards covered with a thick layer of soil and gravel, its squared posts unpainted and worn by the weather to that drab grayness which is the characteristic tone of neutral-tinted Tokyo.
