ABSTRACT

Miss Deutsch (b. 1895) is an American poet and critic. Her This Modern Poetry (1935) was an early American appraisal of the modern movement. In a letter to the editor she writes of first reading Pound: 'he was not only greatly gifted but . . . he was unique and naturally attracted the attention of his juniors. I no longer recall where I first read him. It may have been in the Little Review or, unlikely as that seems, in the Smart Set, or in Poetry. I must have seen scattered poems before reading any of his books. What I recall chiefly is the delight and the excitement that his work afforded.'
