Edward Everett Hale (1822–1909) is best remembered for his story ‘The Man Without A Country’, which was written in 1863 and is credited with doing much to strengthen the Northern cause during the Civil War. It is interesting that Hale’s recognition is extended first of all to Whitman as a proud and self-conscious American.
