ABSTRACT
GARDENS described up to this time have all been based on nature, r on hills and streams, forests, rocks, and cascades. That is, they have all been landscape gardens, no matter how filled with mean~
ing. The artists who made them might idealize their subject, so suggest~ ing and symbolizing it that its final relation to reality might not be at once apparent. But they have all had landscape as their theme and inspiration.
