ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I will look at another motivational element of games, the rewards that players get for winning, or simply for taking part. There is a wide variety of different types of rewards, some that support extrinsic motivation, such a prizes or esteem, while others, like the simple pleasure of completing a difficult puzzle, are more deeply associated with the intrinsic motivation within the game. In this chapter I will start by discussing reward systems in games, looking at the types of rewards that exist and evidence of their impacts on learning. In the second half of the chapter I will look at the most common extrinsic reward used in education — formal assessment — and the ways in which game-based assessment can be implemented.
