ABSTRACT

Most modern digital games employ an array of media types, including visual elements, animations, cut scenes and video, text, speech, sound effects and music. This can create an immersive multi-sensory experience, but can also be overwhelming. In addition to the audio and video elements of games, which have been common for many years, more recently, haptic interface devices have introduced user-feedback cues such as touch, vibration and gesture control to the gaming experience. In this chapter I consider digital games as multi-sensory experiences, exploring the different sensory elements that exist in games. There is very little research on the impact of rich multiple media in games for learning specifically, so in this chapter I present a range of multimedia learning theories and discuss their relevance to computer games for learning.
