ABSTRACT

Abrogation is often used by critics to attack the Qur'an but it is equally employed by Muslims to defend its integrity. This paradoxical use is in no small part due to the confusing definitions that this concept has developed over time and conflicting Ḥadīth narratives. This is seen in the large number of irreconcilable and inconsistent views about abrogation held by Muslim scholars. I do not think it is an exaggeration to say that the subject of abrogation represents a major crisis in Islamic scholarship. Yet this phenomenon has played a major role in the development of Islamic law, touching on the life of every practicing Muslim.
