ABSTRACT

AMONG the Arunta, the Urabunna, the Kaitish, the Warramunga, the Tj ingilla , the Binbinga, the hair which is cut off the deceased and made in waist-girdles, tana, chantimmi, and sent on the avenging expedition, is sacred and is never allowed to be seen by women and children. The only occasions when hair is ever destroyed are those on which it is cut off as a symbol of mourning and then it is immediately burnt.1
