ABSTRACT
At first sight the argument certainly seems paradoxical. Numbers like one billion are scarcely small. But any natural number has only finitely many predecessors and infinitely many successors, so there is a sense in which every number is indeed small. Nevertheless, understood in the ordinary way the conclusion is false.
