ABSTRACT

When we first sailed from Naples, there was great uncertainty as to when we should get through the Suez canal. The English steamer, the Chatham, carrying dynamite, had been sunk in the channel some three weeks before to prevent its cargo blowing up the whole canal in a fire which occurred on the steamer. It had been partially dislodged, allowing one relay of ships to pass; but a second attempt

FROM NAPLES TO MOMBASA to clear the channel had been made a few days previous to our sailing date, and the way was not yet open.
