When we first sailed from Naples, there was great uncertainty as to when we should get through the Suez canal. The English steamer, the Chatham, carrying dynamite, had been sunk in the channel some three weeks before to prevent its cargo blowing up the whole canal in a fire which occurred on the steamer.
