ABSTRACT

Thanksgiving. The toil of the summer is over, the crop is safely gathered, and money is not so tight as during the rest of the year. It is a time for rejoicing and relaxation, and the peasantry are in search of any form of entertainment. In the old days travelling theatrical troupes toured the villages seeking engagements, and putting up a somewhat tawdry performance for an uncritical audience. Lion dancers and mountebanks with performing animals roved the countryside and, in the absence of professional talent, amateur dramatic societies formed by the farmers put on a play which they enjoyed as much as the villagers.
