ABSTRACT

Eighty years passed before the outbreak of the 1914-18 War, when the British Consul at Cheng Tu was transferred to another post. As he was packing for his departure he was interrupted by a farewell visit of the head of the department in the provincial capital, who dealt with Foreign Affairs. This individual was quite excited by a discovery;, made by his underlings in classifying old documents. He invited the Consul to visit his office, and there laid before him the whole proceedings of the trial of the bishop, and showed him all his personal effects, including his pectoral cross. As it was a matter for the French authorities rather than the British, the Consul wrote a note to Pis colleague, but never heard the sequel to the story.
