ABSTRACT

From the point of view of the Feng Shui man a pagoda not only warded off evil influences, but had a positive merit in causing the youth of the city to gain literary distinction at the Civil Service examinations. The two pagodas inside Canton are likened to the two masts of a junk, whose poop is a huge five-storey structure on the north wall of the city. A large commercial centre is thus symbolised, foretelling the prosperity of the city as an emporium, as long as this felicitous combination remains undisturbed.
