ABSTRACT

The above narrative would indicate that the Spirit of the North is regarded as one of the numerous Gods of \Vealth, and there is considerable confirmation for this theory in another of his biographies. He is then assigned to the Chou (N3) dynasty, 1122-255 B.C., and is given the name of Li. Again he is connected with \Vu Tang Shan, for it was there that he was summoned to paradise whilst washing his feet. All the stories agree on the point that he was unshod. Li also subdued two monsters, a tortoise and a serpent, who were ravaging the northern districts.
