ABSTRACT
As the Chinese appreciate calligraphy as much as painting, many fans are decorated with poems by those who are of a literary turn, and presents of verses are exchang-cd between acquaintances of the old scholarly class. So popular was the practice, that the lines were sometimes referred to as the "fan language".
