ABSTRACT

In the Taoist pantheon Confucius is addressed as the "Honoured One of Heaven, who causes literature to flourish, and the world to prosper". Since the adoption of the Western calendar there has been a dual observance of the birthday of the Sage, a fixed and a moving festival. The official date is the 27th August, but certain trades, goldsmiths, money changers, and dealers in medicine, cling to the old tradition of the 27th of the Eighth Moon.
