ABSTRACT

A curious relic has been preserved at the west end of the sanctuary in the shape of the bell and drum belonging to the famous pirate, Chang Pao-tzii (li1*1f ), who captured Hong Kong and Lantau in 1770. The bell, surmounted by the usual dragon, bears the date of casting, the 32nd of the reign of Ch'ien Lung (:(it Il ), or 1768. It was given to the temple by a member of the congregation. A red label, pasted on the bell, gives a transcription of the lettering and states that it is a hundred and eighty-eigh t years old.
