ABSTRACT

WE saw in Chapter VI that perspective appears at a relatively late stage in the child's psychological development. In this respect our experiments merely confirm what had already been demonstrated through direct observation of children's drawing. According to Luquet (op. cit.) ‘intellectual realism’ is not superseded by ‘visual realism’ until about the age of 8 or 9. Not until then does the child draw things ‘as he really sees them’, according to his perspective as an actual observer. Well known though this may be, it is nevertheless surprising, and for two good reasons.
