ABSTRACT
It might seem strange in a book about love that the fi rst chapter is not about our relationships with other people, but rather our relationship with ourselves. Why are we starting here?
An early piece of advice that I remember hearing about relationships was ‘you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else’. Or, sometimes, it was ‘you have to love yourself before anyone else can love you’. Either way, the idea was that you need a foundation of loving yourself before good relationships with other people are possible.
