ABSTRACT
Small shopkeeping ... does not destroy family feeling. The whole family takes part in it: all its members have their role and make themselves useful .... The wife keeps the books, the husband sells, and the children deliver to customers' homes. No division of labour is more natural and moralising, no co-operative society is so harmonious, and nowhere is so little energy wasted, or the organisation so elementary and flexible. Above all, no association is more democratic, for the family, fully fashioned as it is by the hand of nature, is thus the most basic of institutions.!
