ABSTRACT
The response of the Board of Education to the two Interdepartmental Committees which had reported in 1904 appeared to have reinforced its position regarding the superiority of physical education over military drill and the desirability of keeping instruction firmly in the hands of its own qualified physical education teachers. However, supporters of the military training lobby were not prepared to allow the matter to rest there. They found a powerful advocate in Field Marshal Lord Roberts.
