ABSTRACT

On a June morning, an employee gives birth in a restroom at her workplace. Later that day, her fellow workers find her infant’s body in a dumpster behind the business. At the same time, an infant born three months premature and weighing less than a pound is in an intensive care unit staying alive only with the finest state-of-the-art equipment. These are polar extremes of how much individual agents are willing to pay for (value) a commodity (keeping an infant alive).
