T HOUGH Dom Pedro believed that his natural gifts fitted him better for an intellectual life, 1 which he would have preferred to a political one, he had inherited
the Brazilian throne and his strong sense of duty caused him to work ceaselessly for the good of the nation. The established governmental system of the Empire was, however, a distinct obstacle, and his constant struggle with it was depressing.
