ABSTRACT

By 1871 Brazil was at peace within and was free from vexing foreign problems. In February of that year his daughter Leopoldina died of typhoid fever in Vienna, leaving four little sons.1 This, and the fact that Dona Thereza, long in delicate health, was now ill and needed climatic change and expert medical care, caused the Emperor to plan to go to Europe. He obtained from Parliament permission to absent himself from the country and arranged to have the Princess Imperial act as Regent during his absence.
