ABSTRACT

When Ouro Preto and Affonso Celso were calling on him, December 20, the Emperor commented upon a manifesto to the Brazilians regarding the events of November IS which the former minister had published through the Commercio de Portugal. He approved most of it, but thought that Ouro Preto had not been just to Maracaju, and he feared that those reading the communication might get a wrong impression regarding the part played by the Minister of War. He was very hesitant, he said, to believe conscious, premeditated treason on the part of certain people, and he did not think Maracaju had been guilty of treason. With this last Ouro Preto agreed.4
