ABSTRACT

But the Anatta doctrine as described in the Pali Canon is none the less a magnificent re-discovery, with wide implications for our spiritual development. Indeed, one can re-phrase the Signs of Being thus: Everything is changing all the time and has no permanent validity. This includes man in whom, as honest search will reveal, is no part or principle which is an exception to this rule. The refusal to accept this fact in nature produces, by way of frustration, mis-directed desire and personal craving, a large proportion of the world's suffering. It demonstrates for those still willing to hear and see that the ego is not only an illusion when retained in this form, but a very foolish, pain-producing idea.
