ABSTRACT

Sp ANISH Micronesia, according to the treaty made with Germany in I 885, lies between the Equatorial line on the south and the eleventh northern parallel, and between 1390 and 1700 E. longitude.l The great island of New Guinea lies about 1000 miles to the southward. A long chain of 65 2 islands lie scattered over this wide stretch of sea, some 1400 miles in length. The inhabitants number some 50,000, a combination of the Black, the Brown, and the Yellow races. The Caroline archipelago contains thirty-six minor groups. We will take the more important of these one by one from west to east.
