ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of Chinese migrants in Africa and Africans in China is believed to date back centuries: the most important evidence of African presence in China consists of some African terracotta figures of the Tang Dynasty that are kept in museums such as Shaanxi Museum. As for Chinese migrants in Africa, the earliest are likely to have been those left by sailors of the Ming Dynasty’s Admiral Zheng He that are found on Africa’s east coast (Kenya and Somali today); one girl of Chinese descent, Mwamaka Shariff, has even come to mainland China to study with the financial support of the Chinese government.
