ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a letter written by the author while sailing. The author was confined three weeks with a violent fever, stoneblind four days, and expecting every moment to be his last; indeed he most miraculously escaped the jaws of death fortunately, just as he was taken sick. A physician arrived, to whose attention and skill he consider himself principally indebted for his recovery yet a poor object, and being under the necessity of having his head shaved, tends to increase his ghastly figure. They readily guess it was very humbling and provoking for him to lose his fine head of hair, which he always took so much pride in, but he cannot help it, and thank God his life is preserved. A few weeks since arrive the Calypso, from Balaam, with a number of disappointed adventurers who went to that Island.
