ABSTRACT

As is evidenced by the citations in our introductory chapter and other chapters in this book, there are several scholars whose work on emotions has been central to the field of emotional labor. In addition to Arlie Hochschild (see Foreword), we invited five essays from “emotion pioneers” in the fields of organizational behavior (Ashforth & Humphrey;Ashkanasy & Daus; Rafaeli), psychology (Gross), and sociology (Wharton). We asked them for their reflections on the state of emotional labor research and their projections regarding exciting future directions. We are grateful for the contributions of these authors; we believe that they set the stage for the multi-disciplinary study of emotional labor in the 21st century.
