ABSTRACT

The mean explicit and implicit attitude scores are shown in Table 13.1. The mean Likert score from our new study was 3.18 (which indicates more or less a neutral explicit attitude; ‘3’ remember translates as ‘I like non-White and White people equally’), the mean Thermometer Difference (TD) score was 0.31 (which again indicates more or less a neutral explicit attitude towards ethnicity), but critically the mean Difference (D) score (from the Implicit Association Test; IAT) was 0.74 (technically this is a moderate pro-White implicit attitude, but approaching the normal cut-off of 0.8, which would translate as a strong implicit attitude towards Whites).
