ABSTRACT

Before advancing my observations I wish to enter two caveats. The first is th.at I am not a professional anthropologist or sociologist. SeconcUy, any insights I may claim have been gained by personal acquaintance with students and graduates as friends: so that I am careful to avoid violating any confidences and to deal with problems so Widespread as to avoid presenting them as those of anyone individual. I am very much indebted to those of my friends who are themselves Hong Kong University graduates; to them lowe both corrections of crude errors and positive

suggestions. The errors and the rash speculations in this paper are my own.
