ABSTRACT

John always seemed happy as a child. He had a delightful curiosity about the world around him, laughing excitedly when he discovered something new to play with. He had an active imagination, and invented games where he acted out his fantasies of being the hero in the movies and TV shows he watched. He played with the children in his neighbourhood in the usual ways you would expect for a boy growing up in a middle-class family in a small town. As a teenager, however, John became moody and withdrawn. He went through periods when he spent most of his time in his room, listening to music on his headphones. As his adolescence unfolded, he was often irritable, and would snap at his parents with sarcastic and hostile remarks if they attempted to draw him into conversation or suggested that he become more active with others. He became sullen and sometimes lethargic. His hygiene suffered, as he would neglect to bathe or change into clean clothes.
