ABSTRACT

I HAVE said that there is not the same specificity of caste group status in the economic sphere as there is in commensal activities. The nearest approach lies in the ritual values of various traditional occupations which clearly grade those caste groups still doing this work; but, in fact, most people in the village have ritually ‘neutral’ occupations. Again, there is some correspondence of caste status and wealth, but this is general and is supported by none of the sanctions attending commensal relations.
