ABSTRACT
During one generation, individual human beings change greatly: babies become adults, and parents become grandparents. The international system can also change greatly within a generation. The Cold War antagonism seemed to be unchanging, but it did not last more than two generations. Changing Japan–ASEAN relations have been phenomenal over a generation or some thirty years.
