ABSTRACT

The quality of the work turned out by the new Soho Foundry was very poor for the first few years. Its greensand castings were considerably inferior to the work produced by the Lowmoor Ironworks, and remained so for some time, although the smith's work, equally poor at first, had considerably improved by 1799.2 " The emulation of our men has now been awakened," M. R. Boulton was able to report, adding : " I am hopeful of turning out the working gear in such a manner as will render filing a superfluous operation.'' Various improved tools, some copied from Murray, the famous engineer, and others of Murdock's design, had apparently been introduced.
