ABSTRACT

In this chapter some of the observations and arguments presented so far are used in an attempt to derive and apply a classification for settlement schemes. Any set of categories, such as these, is justified only if it is useful. In some social science fields there are too many typologies for convenience, but this does not yet seem to be the case with agricultural development projects in general or settlement schemes in particular. None the less this attempt is made only with hesitation and reticence, and with a persisting fear of cumbering discussion with crude categories. For the limited purposes of this book the categories do help. Whether they have wider uses the reader will judge for himself. If they do not, at least they can be ignored.
