INTHEARABSUCCESSIONSTATES

InthefirstpartofthisaccountoftheMiddleEasternStatewe havedealtwiththemostimportantcharacteristicsofthepolitical andsocialstructureoftheoldOttomanEmpire.Thechangeof regimeinthenewTurkeyhasdoubtlessexertedafardeeper influenceonthesocialstructureofitspopulationthanhavethe newregimesofthemandatorycountriesonthatoftheirs.The TurkishGovernmentaimedconsciouslyatthesesocialtransformations,andappliedeverymethod,includingsomevery drasticones,inordertoaltertheexistingsocialmentalityandthe relativeweightofthevariousclassesintheState.Indeed,itwent further,endeavouringtocreateanewtypeofcitizen,whowould beinapositiontotakeovernewfunctionsintheState.
