ABSTRACT

In Leeds and its neighbourhood, many thousands of women and children are employed in the various departments and processes of the flax and woollen mills; all of whom are subject to the pernicious effects of the pestilential atmosphere they are obliged to breathe from morning to night; and which bring on a number of diseases, which often prove fatal. They are also liable to be crippled and rendered miserable for life, by standing at their machines such long hours, or by accidents from machinery, which, as we have seen, are common. And last, not least, they are

eontinually exposed to a species of temptation, and vice ; which they are but very rarely able to resist.
