ABSTRACT

During the 1970s and 1980s, it became possible to distinguish Turkey’s relations with the United States from those with the other western powers. This trend continued after the end of the Cold War, but with important turning points and frequently contradictory trends in Turkey’s relations with the European Union, on the one hand, and the United States on the other. Hence, what follows concentrates on the Ankara–Washington relationship, leaving the story of Turkey’s bid to join the European Union to the following chapter.
