ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on the factors that coaches could consider when they coach team sports such as soccer, rugby, and hockey. Coaches who coach individual sports, but in team settings such as golf or tennis teams may also find this chapter useful. As such, information is provided on:

• defining team cohesion; • conceptual model of team cohesion; • characteristics of team cohesion; • the importance of cohesion; • the effects of coach behaviour and leadership on team cohesion; • team-building strategies; • factors to consider when planning team building interventions.
