ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The part provides pertinent research and practical guidelines for the implementation of response to intervention (RTI)/multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) in the elementary grades. It examines key topics in assessment and instructional implementation in math, reading, and writing, while addressing the theoretical and empirical evidence to guide decision-making. The part addresses the structure and implementation of RTI/MTSS in elementary mathematics. Although many elementary schools have established processes for RTI/MTSS implementation in reading, the processes in mathematics are often less defined. The part also identifies critical areas of implementation that require further study to effectively meet the needs of students with academic difficulties at the elementary level.
