ABSTRACT

One of the multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) being implemented in high schools is Schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS). The overarching goal of SWPBIS is to sustain a predictable, consistent, positive, and safe environment that prevents patterns of problem behaviors and promotes the academic achievement and social competence of all students. SWPBIS operates as a framework that links elements critical for implementation but allows for the flexibility to adapt to the context and priorities of a school. Each of the three tiers of the MTSS continuum includes four foundational and interactive elements: outcomes, practices, systems and data. Each of the tiers implements a team structure that works with the staff, students and administrators to implement SWPBIS. As with any grade level, the implementation of SWPBIS at the high school level is grounded in a set of three to five positively stated schoolwide expectations.
