ABSTRACT

Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian social worker who initiated and led a mass movement of Christian and Moslem women to end many years of civil war and carnage between fi ghting factions in Liberia. Th ey succeeded in ousting the despot Charles Taylor from the presidency and exiling him from the country. Th ey then supported a transitional government, which held democratic elections resulting in the fi rst popularly elected female head of state in Africa.
